Beschreibung

Given the numerous publications on photographic, film, and television theory, the absence of any overview of video theory as a basis for research and teaching is a striking omission. This is the first book to undertake an inventory and synthesis of the disparate theories that currently exist. The theoretical positions that are presented here derive from the realms of media theory, media archaeology, art theory, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, psychotherapy, ethnology, theatre studies, forensics, social geography, surveillance studies, and gender studies. Divided into twelve chapters on different themes, the book provides a transdisciplinary introduction to fifty years of scholarly, artistic, and political reflections on the medium. Dieter Daniels is professor of art history and media theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) and was a GRC fellow with the project Transdisciplinary Video Theory at the Gutenberg Research College in Mainz from October 2017 to February 2020. Jan Thoben is head of the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts programme at Berlin University of the Arts and was a research associate with the project Transdisciplinary Video Theory at the Gutenberg Research College in Mainz from October 2017 to February 2020.
